Overview:
Small-scale inpatient facilities, known in the industry as “community hospitals” or micro-hospitals, are popping up across the country to offer medical care in underserved communities. These facilities provide a local, convenient alternative to the potentially long wait times for emergency and acute care at major hospitals.
Already thriving in 19 states, these hospitals continue to grow in popularity and are becoming a significant movement in health care. One of the most noteworthy aspects of this trend is that it’s unfolding amid the biggest upheaval in health care in decades. Numerous health reform proposals are swirling in Washington DC, and hospitals and other facilities are merging into ever-expanding systems. Nevertheless, health officials emphatically state, micro-hospitals fill a critical gap in the overall healthcare spectrum.
By providing 24/7 care that includes inpatient and surgical options, these community hospitals serve as a middle ground between freestanding emergency departments that may not offer all the required services and major hospitals that offer more than the community needs.
